Armenian Prisoners in Azerbaijan Report Restrictions on Religious Practice
Source excerpt
Armenian prisoners held in Azerbaijan are being denied meaningful contact with their families, independent medical professionals, and international humanitarian monitors, while reports of restrictions on their Christian religious practice have raised additional concerns about their treatment in detention. Siranush Sahakian, a human rights lawyer representing Armenian prisoners before the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR), said in September that the detainees were being held in “absolute isolation” from the outside world. According to Sahakian, their only contact with the outside is through monitored telephone calls that Azerbaijani authorities can terminate at any time.
